Vancouver to host national coal conference next month

Vancouver will play host to the 2013 Coal Association of Canada (CAC) conference and trade show September 11-13.

Speakers will discuss such topics as Canadian coal production, global coal and steel markets and rail and port capacity.

“The global coal industry is facing challenging times,” said Coal Association of Canada president Ann Marie Hann.

“Our outstanding lineup of speakers will help put the issues into perspective by sharing strategic information about our industry so we can better understand the challenges and opportunities before us.”

The conference will be moderated by Gerard McCloskey, an internationally renowned coal expert and founder of the McCloskey Group, chairman of Merlin Trade and Consultancy and senior adviser, global coal sector, at Renaissance Capital.

Some of the speakers will include:

  • Franz Blancquaert, general manager, solid fuels purchasing, for ArcelorMittal (Luxembourg), the world’s largest steel company;
  • Koji Iwama, general manager of coal for Marubeni Corporation, one of Japan’s largest steel companies;
  • steel market expert Dr. Neil J. Bristow, principal and managing consultant of H&W Worldwide Consulting Pty. Ltd.; and
  • speakers from Canadian coal companies, Coalspur Mines, Fortune Minerals, Teck Resources Ltd., and Walter Energy.

The conference will be held at the Westin Bayshore in Coal Harbour.
