Mining exploration companies operating in British Columbia got some good news from Victoria September 3 as the provincial government announced changes to its exploration permitting process.

Mining companies are now able to apply for a permit online through a service known as FrontCounter BC for these exploration activities: induced polarization (charging the ground with an electrical current to measure the response), drill programs on operating mine sites and to extend in-process exploration work by up to two years.

Permits can only be applied for on properties where a Mines Act permit is already in place.

According to the new rules, companies must provide 30 days notice for each activity to a mines inspector. During the 30-day window, the mines inspector will give the request to First Nations communities in the area in question.

“These are small steps but it does send a message to the investment sector that B.C. is receptive and the exploration process can be streamlined,” said Rick Conte, vice-president of the Association for Mineral Exploration British Columbia.

Although the announcement was made on September 3, changes to the permitting process went into effect September 1.

Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Steve Thomson said, “As B.C.’s ‘one land manager,’ my ministry is committed to getting to natural resource development decisions faster. Low-risk mining activities, such as timeline extensions for previously approved exploration drilling, do not require in-depth review.

“We’re removing bureaucratic processes that will enable companies to create jobs quicker.”
