Entrepreneurs needing angel funding to kickstart their businesses could access up to $500,000 at the biannual BC Angel Forum May 15.

Up to 18 startups will be selected to make pitches to roughly 60 angel investors at the forum, which is held twice a year. Companies hoping to enter the forum must apply by April 15.

“We’re not looking for concepts here,” said forum organizer Bob Chaworth-Musters. “We’re looking for a company that’s going commercial. Some of them are pre-revenue companies; others have sales and profits.

Angels like tech investor Boris Wertz are typically looking to invest anywhere from $25,000 to $250,000. Companies with good products and sound business plans can expect to raise between $100,000 and $500,000, Chaworth-Musters said.

Over the past 18 months, companies that have received Angel Forum money include:

  • Indel Therapeutics, $410,000;
  • Aeos Bio, $300,000;
  • Chatterblock, $300,000;
  • Hatsize Corp. $200,000;
  • Etuve Food, $100,000;
  • PeopleMenders.com, $100,000;
  • SemiosBIO, $200,000;
  • S2G BioChemicals, $100,000.

Companies wanting to participate can apply online by April 15 at http://www.angelforum.org/main.cfm?cid=77. If selected, they will be invited to make a 20-minute presentation on May 15.
