Optimism among small and medium-sized businesses in both British Columbia and across Canada fell slightly in December, according to Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) data released this morning.
The province’s Business Barometer Index was 65.0 for the month, a decrease from 67.1 in November, indicating a slight decrease in businesses that expect their performance to be stronger within the next year. The index remains higher than it was in October (64.7) and September (59.0)
B.C.’s confidence remains higher than average as business confidence nationwide fell slightly, from 62.9 to 62.6.
“The economy continues to grow, albeit modestly,” said Ted Mallett, CFIB chief economist and vice-president. “Entrepreneurs are reporting generally positive news about employment and capital investment plans.
“That suggests growth could improve once we see more economic optimism in the U.S. and Europe.”
The most optimistic provinces are:
- Newfoundland and Labrador (69.1);
- Saskatchewan (66.5); and
- Alberta.
