Small businesses in British Columbia are again the most confident in Canada, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) reported in its monthly survey.

“British Columbia’s small business optimism turned upward again in May—highest in the country and equal to its post-recession record high of 74.1 last seen in May 2011,” said Kimball Kastelen, a policy analyst with the CFIB.

“Hiring plans also surged upward, with 30 per cent of owners now planning to add full-timers—and only 3 per cent are expecting to shed staff in the next few months.”

The survey also shows business optimism in Canada reaching a two-year high, the business advocacy group said.

Business owners in natural resources, information, retail and business services were the most confident, while owners of hospitality, wholesale, agricultural and manufacturing were slightly less optimistic.
