A Burnaby manufacturer has landed a $60 million contract to make mobile shelters for the Canadian military. Dozens of other B.C. suppliers will benefit from the contract.
Weatherhaven yesterday unveiled the first of 900 mobile shelters that it will make for the Armed Forces.
The mobile shelters can be used as command centres, field clinics and kitchens, and can be used for military, peacekeeping or humanitarian missions.
The shelters have an on-board mechanical room, allowing each individual unit to operate independently.
“These state-of-the-art units are part of the government of Canada’s plan to replace the 30-year old technology now being used by our armed forces,” said MP James Moore, the Conservative government’s senior B.C. minister.
“Weatherhaven and their partners have led the world in the development of this technology, and we are thrilled that we have a made-in-Canada solution to the needs of our military.”
The mobile military units are made with parts and supplies from 47 B.C. companies, eight of which supplied 90% of the materials and services. They are:
- Tri-Metal, Surrey, container shell;
- Wesgar and Wesgar Completions, Port Coquitlam, sheet metal components, painting and assembly;
- Seagull, Vancouver, wood paneling;
- Frontier, Delta, onboard generator;
- Analytics, Delta, battery chargers;
- DNA Data Networking, Burnaby, electrical system;
- Wespac, Coquitlam, electrical installation.
The contract is expected to create more than 80 full-time equivalent jobs in B.C. over the three-year term of the project.
