Surrey’s Central City Brewers + Distillers has relaunched some of its beer labels following copyright concerns.
Controversy swirled earlier this month, when the brewer released the first of a series of labels featuring comic-book-themed characters that populate Central City.
Its Detective Saison bore a striking resemblance to Deena Pilgrim, who is a comic book detective used in the Powers Supergroup comic, which is published by Image Comics.
Brewery executives now say that the first labels were of an imposter who was posing as Detective Saison.
“[Detective Saison managed to escape her capture, fighting off the thugs and freeing herself.” said Tim Barnes, who is the brewery’s vice-president of sales and marketing.
“Now the real Detective Sarah Saison is back, and she’s not happy that she was impersonated.”
He said that the brewery immediately halted shipment of its products when it was clear that the labels bore a striking resemblance to an existing comic book character. It then switched creative agencies and turned to Ron Fielder of Barnstorm Creative.
Central City also announced this week that it is entering the craft cider market with the launch of Hopping Mad Dry Hopped Apple Cider.
