Do you have a great idea for a new business? Vancouver entrepreneurs are being invited to throw their ideas at the wall at the fourth annual Startup Weekend May 31 to June 2 and see what sticks.
The annual event brings together roughly 150 entrepreneurs and software and hardware engineers to listen to each other's ideas, and then pick the best ones.
Groups are then formed around the best startup ideas, with the idea of creating 10 new startups.
The startup methods developed by serial entrepreneur Steve Blank, author of the Startup Owner's Manual, are used to build new startups over a weekend.
"The point of the weekend is to teach participants how to go to customer discovery and development and build a startup using Steve Blank's methodologies," said Yaniv Talmor, a local organizer for the event.
MyBestHelper.com – a social networking platform that helps people find trustworthy babysitters, caregivers and house-sitters – was one local startup that was created from a Startup Weekend in 2011.
In the past, most ideas were around mobile and web-based ideas, Talmor said.
"We're branching out this time around to hard engineering," he said. "We've got the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) involved this time around."
The annual Startup Weekend is a Seattle-based organization that has spawned weekend events in several North American cities.
