Swedish furniture giant Ikea has issued a recall of its PATRULL nightlight after receiving a complaint about the product in Europe.

The company received a report in Austria that said a child received an electric shock and minor wounds on the hand after the nightlight’s plastic cover detached while the child was trying to take the light out of its socket.

Ikea has sold more than 83,000 units of this product in Canada and 359,000 in the United States since it first became available in 2013.

Health Canada said it has not received any complaints about the product.

“The nightlight’s plastic covering can detach and expose electrical components, posing an electrical shock hazard,” Health Canada said on its website.

“Consumers should immediately stop using and unplug the nightlight and return it to an Ikea store for a full refund.”

Ikea issued a statement saying it ceased sale of this product immediately after receiving the report.

“Whenever an Ikea product is involved in an incident, we take immediate action,” the company said. “Ikea tested samples of more than 600 PATRULL nightlights and they all passed testing; however, Ikea has decided to recall the lamp to avoid the risk of any further incidents.”

The recall was issued jointly by Health Canada, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission and Ikea.
