A Nanaimo-based medical marijuana company, Tilray, has struck a deal to begin exporting cannabis products to Chile.

The company announced it has received approvals from both Canadian and Chilean governments to export medical marijuana products.

Tilray produces a range of products, including oils and capsules and has GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) certification, a standard of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that is recognized by other countries.

Tilray already exports products to Australia and Europe.

“Today’s announcement marks Tilray’s entry into Latin America and expands our international reach to a fourth continent,” Tilray president Brendan Kennedy said in a press release.

Tilray has partnered with Chile’s Alef Biotechnology, which will distribute Tilray’s cannabis in Chile.

The company said it will begin exporting in February and that the product will be distributed by hospitals and pharmacies.

Tilray is one of three companies founded by Kennedy’s Privateer Holdings, a venture capital firm based in Seattle.

In addition to producing and testing medical marijuana, Tilray is also involved in a number of research projects, including a study at the University of BC that is researching the use of medical marijuana for treating post traumatic stress disorder.
