Sears Canada (TSX:SCC) is laying off 79 employees at its Vancouver service centre and a total of 800 employees nationwide over the next six months, the company announced November 26.
“There will still be a team of about 25 people [at the Vancouver service centre],” Sears Canada spokesperson Vincent Power told Business in Vancouver.
“A big part of it is that we will have a consolidation to Calgary.”
The layoffs are mostly in the Sears’ repair services and parts divisions, with 712 workers losing their jobs in those departments. The remainder of the cuts will be to workers at the company’s head office in Toronto.
“The changes we are announcing today are being made to bring the structure of our organization in line with the size of our business,” said Doug Campbell, president and chief executive officer of Sears Canada.
The news comes weeks after the company announced it was closing its Richmond Centre location and four other stores across the country, affecting 159 positions in Richmond and almost 1,000 jobs nationwide.
