When it comes to catering to the needs of female cyclists, a new bicycle shop plans to live up to its motto by helping women in Vancouver “Ride how you like, like how you ride.”
Andrea Smith, co-owner of Sidesaddle, said the women-focused bicycle boutique will be geared towards serving the growing population of women cyclists in the Lower Mainland, which has more than doubled in recent years.
Smith, a commuter cyclist with more than a decade’s experience in bicycle repair, said Sidesaddle’s main goal is to provide “a shop to call home” for female cyclists.
“Women are turning to cycling for exercise and transportation as never before,” she said.
The new 1,000-square-foot shop, scheduled to open on June 13, will be nestled near busy bike routes on the city’s east side at Victoria Drive and East Broadway.
Smith, who has a background in urban planning, said she and co-owner Lucas Gallagher, a bicycle mechanic and racer, came up with the idea after identifying local demand for respectful, knowledgeable service and gear for women who ride and realizing there is a gap in the Canadian marketplace. Smith said the shop, focused on urban and road riding, is designed to create “an open and unintimidating atmosphere” and also provide a social and educational element by offering classes, group rides and special events.
According to the City of Vancouver, bicycle trips made by women doubled to 41% between 2008 and 2011 and the numbers continue to grow.
While the store will focus on women cyclists, anyone will be welcome to shop for unisex and women-specific bikes, accessories and clothing. Sidesaddle will also feature a full-service repair shop.
