Want younger-looking skin? A Vancouver biotech may have found the formula.

Sirona Biochem has concluded a study on an anti-aging syrum, which has applications in both the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries, and the results are extremely positive, the company announced May 20.

The cosmetic possibilities include an anti-aging cream, for which there is a potential global market of $300 billion, the company said.

The pharmaceutical applications have implications for organ transplants and protection from UV rays or radiation.

The compound, known as TFC-837, was put through a 12-day study comparing cells that were protected by the product with those with no protection. By the study’s 10th day, 75% of the protected cells were still fully viable. Among unprotected cells, 100% were dead.

“We couldn’t be more excited by these results and the potential value these compounds can create,” said Sirona Biochem Neil Belenkie.

“This is absolutely groundbreaking technology; the first in a new family of synthetic glycoproteins successfully created and patented by our scientific team.”

Further testing is planned. The product will be subject to tests involving cold temperatures, nutrient deprivation and oxidative stress.

The company had announced it had completed a patent application for the compound in March.
