Burnaby’s Ballard Power Systems (TSX:BLD) has appointed Randall (Randy) MacEwen as president and CEO, the fuel cell technology company announced September 1.

MacEwen will take the helm October 6, replacing John Sheridan. Sheridan, who has headed up the company since 2006, plans to retire at the end of the year.

“Randy MacEwen has extensive executive-level experience leading a range of clean energy organizations – including involvement in the hydrogen and fuel cell sector,” Ballard said in a release.

“He is a proven ‘growth company’ CEO with demonstrated strengths in a broad range of key areas.”

MacEwen’s background is in clean energy. Some of his past work includes serving as CEO in Sparq Systems Inc., which manufactures parts for residential solar systems, founding NextCleanTech LLC and leading the $155 million sale of hydrogen generation company Stuart Energy Systems to Hydrogenics in 2005.

He has also worked as a lawyer with business law firm Torys LLP in Toronto.
