The British Columbia government will disband the body that oversees private career training schools.
The decision comes as part of the province’s ongoing core review of government programs and agencies. The responsibilities of the Private Career Training Institutions Agency (PCTIA) will now be transferred to the Ministry of Advanced Education.
PCTIA was created in 2004 and replaced the Private Post-Secondary Education Commission. It has the power to shut down private colleges that don’t meet basic education standards.
Soon after coming to power in 2001, the B.C. Liberals introduced legislation that allowed private colleges to offer B.C. degrees. Over 100 schools are currently listed as accredited institutions.
The B.C. government expects to save $1.5 million over three years by folding PCTIA into the ministry.
