MRM Proteomics, a biotech spinoff from Genome B.C. and the University of Victoria, had enlisted a new CEO to help the business attract more venture capital.

New Jersey native Gary Kruppa joined the company July 7 and will continue working from his office in Boston but he said he plans to make it out to the West Coast at least once a quarter.

The company offers diagnostic services to pharmaceutical companies searching for biomarkers in proteins. MRM also offers kits to help others conduct high-level protein profiling on their own.

“In the first week since joining I’ve gotten more excited for the potential for those two parts of the business,” he said.

“Those are the two things that will keep the company cash-flow positive and enable me to get my feet under me. And ultimately I think we’ll need some capital investment in order to grow both the kit business and then ultimately move into diagnostics.”

Kruppa, who has a PhD in chemical physics, said his main plan to focus on building the customer base and increasing cash flow until he can hire a business development officer in the next six to eight months.
