BlackBerry (TSX:BB) announced 250 more layoffs this week, all in their Waterloo office.
This follows 600 layoffs announced in October as part of a planned restructuring that includes a 40% reduction in its workforce.
"We are in a period of transition and we must focus on enhancing our financial results to be in a better position to compete in this current mobile environment," BlackBerry said in a statement emailed to Business in Vancouver.
"As such, BlackBerry has implemented an ongoing workforce reduction that will impact approximately 4,500 employees globally over the next three quarters."
Earlier this month, a $4.7 billion deal that would have seen the embattled company bought out by Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited (TSX:FFH) fell through. Fairfax instead led a group of investors in a $1 billion investment. At the same time, CEO Thorsten Heins announced he was stepping down.
In contrast to the latest belt-tightening, the news of the layoffs comes the same week the mobile company announced the launch of a new luxury phone, the Porsche Design P'9982 Smartphone. The phone has a 10.2 operating system and a leather backing, and a limited-edition model comes with crocodile leather.
