Cummins Westport has been awarded the Energy Security Prize, one of the advanced technology awards from Securing America's Future Energy (SAFE), Cummins Westport announced October 16.

The prize, which recognizes emerging and advanced technologies that can potentially reduce America's dependence on petroleum-based fuels, will be presented at the OPEC Oil Embargo +40 Summit in Washington.

Vancouver-headquartered Cummins Westport, which is a joint venture between Cummins Inc. (NYSE:CMI) and Westport Innovations Inc. (TSX:WPT)(NASDAQ:WPRT), is being acknowledged for its spark-ignited natural gas engine technology that uses 100% compressed, liquefied or renewable natural gas.

Jim Arthurs, president of Cummins Westport, said both of the venture's parent companies have been pioneers in the use of natural gas for transportation for more than two decades.

"Our joint venture has been a major force in commercializing these engines and making them available for use in transit, refuse and truck applications in both North America and around the world," said Arthurs.

"We appreciate the recognition of SAFE, and the honor of being one of the first recipients of this award."
