Two Delta-based companies are giving a whole new meaning to greenhouse gases, with the installation of what is being billed as the world's first carbon capture and reuse system for greenhouses.

Provincial government officials will be on hand Friday in Delta for the media launch of a demonstration project of the GC6 Green Carbon Capture System developed by ProSelect Gas Treating Inc.

The system heats the greenhouse by burning biomass, such as wood waste, then strips the carbon dioxide from the flu gas and feeds it back into the greenhouse, where the plants absorb it.

The demonstration project is being conducted at greenhouses owned by SunSelect Produce, which operates 70 acres of greenhouses in Aldergrove and Delta.

The project was partly funded by the federal and provincial governments through Sustainable Development Technology Canada program and the Innovative Clean Energy Fund.
