The current incarnation of the Canucks may not be doing anything exceptional on the ice these days, but that hasn't stopped a Vancouver-based startup from scoring a cool $250,000 investment from a former member of the NHL team.
HelpHub announced March 24 it had secured an investment deal with Sora Capital Corp., whose CEO is ex-Vancouver Canuck Paul Reinhart.
The founder of HelpHub, which offers electronic tutoring services, said most of the money will go toward marketing and developing mobile applications.
"All the features are really focused on providing instant tutoring anytime, anywhere," said Miguel Kudry, who started HelpHub in early 2013.
The 21-year-old Douglas College student initially only offered tutoring services over the phone. From there, he said he listened to feedback from tutors and students and expanded the service to include video conferencing and online chats.
Kudry described the platform as an "online marketplace for tutoring."
"We really empower tutors to choose their own rates…we only charge them a commission fee," he said.
He added the capital injection means he can listen to clients' demands for more services, including mobile platforms.
Reinhart, who spent most of his NHL career playing for the Calgary Flames before joining the Canucks for two seasons, will sit on the HelpHub board of directors.
