Two-thirds of British Columbians use Facebook at least once per week and half use it daily, according to an online survey conducted by pollster Insights West and Internet marketing company 6S Marketing.

The poll found that 67% of B.C. residents use the friends-based network weekly – more than three times higher than Twitter.

Only 21% of the online users said that they use Twitter at least once a week.

Upstart social media apps with even fewer weekly users include:

  • Pinterest (11%);
  • LinkedIn (9%); and
  • Instagram (9%).

Facebook was also dominant among those who use social media daily. Almost half of those who took the online survey said they use Facebook every day.

Other social media sites with fewer daily users include:

  • Twitter (13%);
  • Instagram (5%);
  • Pinterest (4%);
  • LinkedIn (3%)

"Facebook's dominance continues unabated among British Columbians — especially those under the age of 30," said Steve Mossop, who is president of Insights West.

"Although other social networking sites are gaining in popularity, they have a long way to go to compete with the Facebook powerhouse."

Results are based on an online survey of 838 B.C. residents aged 18 and older, conducted between March 2 and 13.
