Three major genomics-based research initiatives in B.C. will receive $14.7 million in funding from the federal government.

The funding comes from Genome Canada's 2012 Science and Technology Innovation Centre Operations Support Competition, which has been renewed.

B.C.-based research projects to receive funding are:

  • $8.7 million for the BC Cancer Agency's Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre;
  • $4.3 million for the University of Victoria's Genome BC Proteomics Centre; and
  • $1.7 million for the Metabolomics Innovation Centre.

"Refunding for these three platforms is key to continuing the genomics enterprise across Canada," said Genome BC CEO Alan Winter.

"Genomics research is continuing to produce huge amounts of information for analysis and without the support of technology platforms it would be impossible to maximize the research productivity into tangible outcomes."
