The long-serving head of the B.C. Tech Association will be calling it a day come this fall.
Bill Tam, who has served as CEO for the tech industry’s trade association since 2011, will retire from the top job following an annual general meeting set for October.
Tam announced in a blog post Thursday (June 7) that he’ll be sticking around the B.C. Tech Association in a part-time advisory role to help with the transition of a new CEO.
“The reason for my decision was entirely personal. Leonardo DiCaprio once offered, ‘Never refuse an invitation, never resist the unfamiliar, never fail to be polite and never outstay the welcome,’” he wrote in the blog.
“In my privileged role over the past six years, I have tried to heed this advice. As the final chapter unfolded, I decided it was time.”
Tam told Business In Vancouver after serving two terms it makes “a lot of sense” for someone else to take the industry group’s initiatives “to the next level.”
Prior to joining the B.C. Tech Association, Tam served as CEO of EQO Communications in Vancouver and was an executive at Rogers Telecom and Bell Canada.
He also served as a CEO-in-residence at the B.C. Tech Association’s Centre4Growth, an accelerator aimed at early stage companies.
“I’ll always be very involved in advising and helping companies. That’s always been my passion and my love, so I’ll continue to do that with this organization,” he said in an interview.
The association has retained Korn Ferry executive search firm to help with the search for Tam’s successor.
