B.C.’s Industry Training Authority announced July 31 that Gary Herman will be its new CEO and that Jeff Nugent will be the organization’s COO, effective immediately.

Both have been in those positions on an interim basis since August 2013 when longtime CEO Kevin Evans left the organization, which is the Crown agency responsible for oversight of the industry training system for credentialed trades.

Herman joined ITA in January 2013. He began his career by apprenticing for seven years in three trades and is certified as a tool & die maker and as a “die sinker” in the manufacturing process of forging.

For the past 20 years, Herman has served in executive roles with several companies including ThyssenKrupp Fabco, VAE Nortrak and Ebco Industries.

Nugent has been with ITA since August 2004, when he was a strategy officer. He has been involved in a number of strategic initiatives, including playing a key role in the development of a 90-day, nine-month transition plan and chairing a national working group overseeing the pilot of new assessment approaches for the Red Seal Program.

The appointments follow the recently launched B.C. Skills for Jobs Blueprint and recommendations made in The Industry Training Authority and Trades Training in B.C.: Recalibrating for High Performance report, also known as the McDonald Report.

Business in Vancouver profiled Herman in March 2013, when he was the ITA's COO.
