More than 14,000 students are enrolled this year at Kwantlen Polytechnic University – the largest enrolment in the institute's 30-year history.

As of September 9, 14,382 students had enrolled, which is "several hundred" more than last year at this time, according to the university. Enrolment is up for both domestic and international students.

International student enrolment is up 12% over last year to 1,357, and enrolment for online classes is up 24%.

The increase in numbers is good for the university, said Kwantlen president and vice-chancellor Alan Davis.

"KPU's importance to the region increases along with its enrolments, he said. "We are proud to contribute to the economic, social and cultural development of our communities."

A new degree program – bachelor of science with biology major – has 24 students enrolled, and KPU's School of Businesses's bachelor of business administration in accounting is up 8%.

Other noteworthy enrolment increases include:

  • a 10% increase in the bachelor of science in nursing;
  • certificate in special education teaching is up 23%;

  • the number of students studying offsite for work experience, clinical experience and practicums is up 30%;
  • enrolment in the Faculty of Arts is up 7%;

  • enrolment in Criminology is up 26%;
  • students studying Science and Horticulture is up 4%.
