B.C.'s aerospace sector got a boost Friday when the federal government announced that it would provide more than $670,000 to the University of Victoria to spend on research and development to improve the safety, performance and affordability of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV).
Most UAVs are used primarily as either highly sophisticated military tools or amateur radio-controlled units. However, UAVs can be used for a diverse range of tasks that are repetitive, hazardous or need to be performed on short notice.
"Today's funding demonstrates our government's commitment to supporting leading edge western Canadian industries, such as unmanned aerial vehicle systems," said MP Andrew Saxton, who announced the new funding.
