In the latest chapter of the CUPE saga, support workers at Royal Roads University reached a tentative agreement yesterday, as yet to be ratified by members of CUPE 3886 and the university.
The agreement is similar to those struck with other post-secondary institutions and includes:
- no wage increases in 2010 and 2011, in line with the province’s net zero mandate;
- increases of 2% for 2012 and 2013;
- improved contract wording surrounding overtime rates, vacation and sick days and probation periods; and
- stronger anti-discrimination and anti-harassment language.
Paul Allison, CUPE 3886 president, said the union is relieved to have reached this tentative agreement after more than two years of bargaining.
“Through that difficult bargaining process, we have built solidarity amongst our members and strengthened our relationship with students, with other local unions and with the Royal Roads University Faculty Association.”
In other post-secondary institutions, members of CUPE Local 2773 at the College of the Rockies announced yesterday that they have voted 87% in favour of strike action.
CUPE members at Vancouver Community College voted last week and plan to start job action today at both of its Vancouver campuses.
Vancouver Island University voted Monday; results have yet to be announced.
