If you are a Rogers Communications Inc. (TSX:RCI) or Fido customer, you may have had trouble making calls or texts or getting Internet access this morning (September 25) via your cell phone or smartphone.

A spokesperson for Rogers confirmed reports that a widespread wireless outage was caused by a train derailment this morning in Saskatchewan. The train severed a mainline fibre-optic cable.

"The service disruption that customers experienced this morning was as a result of a fibre cut that was caused by a train derailment in Saskatchewan," Jennifer Kett said in an email. "The fiber cut impacted wireless services in Western Canada."

The service has since been restored, she said.

Telus (TSX:T) confirmed the incident did not affected its wireless customers.

RCMP in Saskatchewan reported 16 CN train cars derailed this morning near Landis, west of Saskatoon.
