A Vancouver accelerator that has helped spawn 35 new companies in the wireless space is launching a new machine-to-machine (M2M) accelerator program in partnership with Sierra Wireless (TSX:SW) and Rogers (TSX:RCI).

Wavefront’s new M2M Accelerator Program is designed to foster innovation and accelerate commercialization for businesses involved in M2M communication.

M2M is the communication between wired and wireless devices, sometimes referred to as the “Internet of things.” An electronic keychain device used to remotely lock your car door is a simple M2M device.

It’s an area that is exploding, according to Juniper Research, which projects the M2M sector will generate $35 billion globally by 2016.

“As M2M grows to an estimated 50 billion connected devices by 2020, M2M will impact every sector of our economy, providing greater visibility to critical data and streamlining and automating the operations of businesses and consumer lifestyles,” said Hazim Sharif Eldin, Wavefront’s M2M Accelerator Program manager.

Wavefront provides startups in the mobile and wireless space with access to hardware and networks needed to test new systems or equipment. It also has partnerships with companies and governments all over the world.

The new M2M program will give participating companies access to Rogers Wireless connectivity and developer platforms like Sierra Wireless AirVantage M2M Platform.
