Slow-loading and poorly optimized websites are costing retailers an estimated $600 million in lost e-commerce, according to a new study by Vancouver’s Mobify.
Mobifyspecializes in optimizing websites for multiple platforms, including smartphones and tablets, which more and more consumers are using to access company websites.
According to one recent projection, more Canadians will connect to the Internet via their smartphones than computers by 2014.
Many websites are still not optimized for viewing on mobile devices, however.
To calculate just how much revenue retailers are losing in sales related to poor website functionality, Mobify measured the mobile download times of the top 100 retail sites in North America and applied a calculation developed by KISSmetrics to estimate e-commerce revenue losses.
“With the increase in smartphones and tablets, it’s no surprise that more customers are using mobile devices for shopping,” said Mobify CEO Igor Faletski. “At the same time, many major e-commerce websites suffer from poor mobile web performance.
“A slow-loading website is a massive obstacle for mobile customers, especially when accessing content-heavy responsive pages.”
