A B.C. solar energy company is cashing in on Ontario’s clean energy subsidies. Carmanah Technologies Corp. (TSX:CMH) has won a $1.3 million contract to provide a 350 kilowatt solar photovoltaic installation for a community centre in Markham, Ontario.
Ontario has a feed-in-tariff (FIT) program that subsidizes renewable energy projects. It is part of Ontario’s efforts to reduce its reliance on coal and nuclear power.
Carmanah, which is based in Victoria, specializes in solar-powered LED lighting systems for things like streetlights, traffic beacons, marina dock lights and aviation lighting.
Under the contract, Carmanah will work with Ontario photovoltaic maker PowerStream Inc. to install a 350 kW rooftop photovoltaic system at the Markham’s Thornhill Community Centre.
Carmanah’s experience with rooftop installations was one of the reasons the company was chosen for the job.
“Carmanah was up to the challenge in finding a solution for the size and complexity of this project,” said Carmanah CEO Bruce Cousins. “Our expertise in handling unique projects has been recognized by PowerStream and we hope to continue supporting their leadership in rooftop PV opportunities in Ontario.”
The contract win defies the otherwise bleak outlook for solar energy firms. (See this week’s cover story “Global solar prospects dim as Day4 stock slides”.)
