Just because tech startups are firmly entrenched in the digital world doesn’t mean those organizations aren’t turning to traditional methods of charity this holiday season.
The Startups Care food drive has drawn 40 tech companies and organizations to its cause since launching fewer than two weeks ago.
Participating companies are collecting non-perishables for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society. Volunteers will be stopping by offices throughout Gastown, Yaletown and Mount Pleasant to pick up donations on December 15.
Kashoo’s Christopher Luft is spearheading the campaign.
He decided to mount a food drive after contemplating how thankful he was to have a healthy 11-month-old daughter, a happy marriage and a career he loved.
“Just going with that startup mentality, thinking about how to grow it, and (I) figured it was something other people would get behind,” Luft said.
“And before I even got going with it, I started talking to people and it just sort of took on a life of its own and seems to be growing exponentially.”
Companies that were once startups but have since moved past that stage have also been invited to participate.
“(We) don’t want to limit the people who can contribute,” Luft said.
So far, contributors include Kashoo, the B.C. Innovation Council, PlentyOfFish and Mobify.
