Telus (TSX:T) plans to add to its growing digital health business with the purchase of Ontario’s largest electronic medical records (EMR) provider.

Telus announced Tuesday its offer to buy MD Practice Software LP. The deal has not been finalized, so a sale price has not been disclosed. The deal is slated to close March 4.

This week’s announcement follows Telus’ acquisition of Vancouver’s Wolf Medical Records in February 2012, and KinLogix –  Quebec’s largest provider of cloud-based EMR – in October 2012.

The acquisitions were part of a $1 billion investment Telus Health has made in the digital health space over the past 10 years to position itself as a leading provider of electronic medical records.

“This acquisition is part of Telus Health’s future vision for next generation EMR, which enables us to examine best practices, drive efficiencies and reduce care gaps throughout the healthcare system, resulting in strengthened primary care access for Canadians,” Telus Health president Paul Lepage said in a press release.

With the acquisition, Telus Health will provide electronic medical records to 9,000 physicians across Canada.

Telus Health provides products to all major stakeholders in the health system, including hospitals, pharmacies, and extended healthcare providers such as physiotherapists and chiropractors.
