The province has announced three more tentative agreements reached with locals of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) at Thompson Rivers University (TRU), the University of British Columbia (UBC) and the University of Northern BC (UNBC).
The agreements are with:
- approximately 600 support staff at TRU who work as system analysts, accountants, cashiers, bookstore clerks and buyers, registration and admissions clerks, maintenance and utility staff, library technicians, ancillary staff and Open Learning support staff;
- approximately 2,000 employees at UBC working in trades, food services, custodial services, research and security; and
- approximately 350 administrative staff at UNBC, including internal and external support staff, as well as English language studies instructors.
Each of the agreements covers four years: two negotiated under the province’s 2010 Net Zero Mandate and two years negotiated under the 2012 Cooperative Gains Mandate, which allows for modest wage increases where employers can find savings within existing budgets.
The government is touting the agreements as evidence of the success of the Cooperative Gains Mandate.
“These agreements show that the Cooperative Gains Mandate is working and savings can be found within existing budgets to fund modest wage increases,” said advanced education minister John Yap.
