The University of British Columbia (UBC) signed a five-year co-operation agreement with China’s Chongqing municipal government August 25.

According to UBC, the agreement will facilitate “increased academic and research collaborations with universities and research institutes.”

The agreement is the first deal signed since UBC established its China Council, a group charged with expanding UBC’s relationships with universities in China. It will focus on urban planning, sustainable development, law and engineering, among other disciplines.

“Chongqing is a strategic location within China for western development,” said Toope.

“This unique agreement builds on UBC’s existing relationship with the city and provides tremendous opportunities for our institutions to join forces and share research, knowledge and innovation, which are key drivers to the global economy.”

Chongqing is a city of nearly 29 million people, located in the southwest of China.

The agreement was signed in Chongqing by Toope and Xu Zhou, the director Chongqing’s education commission.
