The Vancouver company that is putting high-definition cameras in space has signed its first deal with a TV broadcaster.
UrtheCast has signed an agreement with Discovery to provide live high-definition video of Earth for the Science Channel.
The Discovery Science Channel is also working on a special segment focusing on the UrtheCast technology itself.
“We are the home for space programming on television,” Science Channel executive vice president Debbie Adler Myers said.
“Our viewers expect us to have the best, most authoritative television programs about space. UrtheCast helps us build on that promise, giving Science Channel the most stunning live images of Earth for use online and on-air.”
UrtheCast co-founder and executive vice president Wade Larson said, “This exciting partnership will tell UrtheCast’s unique story, and the story of Earth, in a highly compelling way.
“The Science Channel speaks to a large audience of inquisitive minds. It’s precisely the type of audience that UrtheCast appeals to.”
As detailed in Business in Vancouver last year, UrtheCast has been working with MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. (TSX:MDA) to put high resolution cameras on the International Space Station. They will stream both still images and live video of the Earth.
Originally scheduled to go live in 2012, UrtheCast is now projected to begin beaming back images in October or November.
