Vancouver’s UrtheCast Corp. (TSX:UR) released its first images from the International Space Station (ISS) April 3.

The images show approximately 300 square kilometers around the Jamaican city of Moneague, taken on March 28.

“This is a pivotal moment for the company and for everyone who's been a part of the vision that we set in motion in 2010,” said UrtheCast co-founder and chief executive officer, Scott Larson.

“Our team has been working extremely hard to make certain that we reach this goal of democratizing a very powerful perspective on the world.”

The company also announced April 3 that ISS activities are exempt from the U.S. government’s decision to suspend any contact with members of the Russian government.

“It is business as usual for the company, as we continue the commissioning of our cameras on the International Space Station,” said UrtheCast president and COO Wade Larson.

“The ISS has long enjoyed a privileged position in international diplomacy and has survived unscathed during multiple international crises in recent years.”

Larson went on to explain that the ISS has been nominated for 2014’s Nobel Peace Prize.

The company said in February that it expects to unveil its first full-colour Ultra HD video of the Earth in 2014’s second quarter. The company is working on calibrating its cameras in preparation for this event.
