The results of a new study of startups around the world reveal that Vancouver is in the top 10 when it comes to having the right ecosystem to promote tech startups.

The Startup Ecosystem Report 2012, published by Telefónica Digital and San Francisco’s Startup Genome, shows that Vancouver ranks in ninth place, just behind Toronto.

Silicon Valley is the best location when it comes to startups. Tel Aviv and Los Angeles round out the top three.

Vancouver ranks second in the world in the “Mindset” category, which measures the vision and resilience of entrepreneurs. The city came in fourth globally in the “Talent” category, which looks at entrepreneurs’ age, education, experience, expertise, ability to mitigate risk and previous startup success rate.

“Our hope is by completing the first data-driven, comparative study of this global phenomenon we will help to facility a constructive public dialogue,” said Bjoern Lasse Herrmann, CEO of Startup Genome.

Herrmann said the study was conducted in part to put a spotlight on the emerging hotspots of technology entrepreneurship “that will be responsible for powering a massive global socioeconomic cultural shift.”

The research was conducted by looking at over 50,000 entrepreneurs around the world. More information on the study can be found here.
