A school that strengthens the brain through neuroplasticity training is growing.

In its February 1-7, 2011, issue, Business in Vancouver profiled Vancouver’s Eaton Brain Improvement Centre, which has since changed its name to the Eaton Cognitive Improvement Centre.

Founded by Howard Eaton in 2005, the school uses a teaching method that Toronto’s Barbara Arrowsmith Young created more than 30 years ago.

Neuroplasticity strengthens parts of the brain that may be underdeveloped in people with learning disabilities like dyslexia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Eaton has schools in Vancouver and Victoria.

“The big news, of course, is that we are opening a new school in Surrey,” said centre manager Alexandra Dunnison.

A location is still being scouted for the new school, which is scheduled to open in September for children and adults. The Vancouver school’s program, which originally offered full-time morning and part-time afternoon programs, now also offers a full-time afternoon session. The Eaton schools are certified by the BC Teachers Federation and include math and English in their curriculum but no other courses required in B.C.’s public-school program. Students therefore can’t obtain a diploma through them. Annual enrolment is $25,000. •
