Trucks and buses in India that depend on natural gas are getting an extra boost from a Vancouver-based company that's designed a new technology aimed at enhancing low-cost rides in developing countries.
Westport Innovations Inc. (TSX: WPT), which unveiled its latest piece of proprietary technology February 12, described the Gas Enhanced Methane Diesel (GEMDi) system as "a significant breakthrough" in the realm of dual fuel performance.
The B.C. company said in a release GEMDi system is able to offer original equipment manufacturers (OEM) a "fully integrated, high-performance engine."
Wesport worked with India-based Tata Motors (NYSE: TTM) to develop the technology to be compatible with their next generation of 5-litre engines. Those engines are targeted for medium-duty trucks and buses that rely on natural gas.
"Westport GEMDi is the right solution for engine OEMs, such as Tata, that are committed to offering sustainable products utilizing natural gas as a primary fuel, while maintaining diesel-like performance and efficiency," Wesport vice-president Thomas Rippon said in a statement.
Rajendra Petkar, head of power systems engineering at Tata Motors, said natural gas vehicles are gaining more momentum in India.
"With Westport GEMDi technology, we are pioneering the next generation natural gas product that will be efficient, economic, and flexible in fuel, enhancing customers' driving range," he said in a release.
