The Vancouver maker of the popular social media game Margaritaville has been acquired for an undisclosed amount by game developer Kabam, which plans to keep the studio's team working in Vancouver.

Kabam's acquisition of Exploding Barrel Games Inc. is just the latest in a series of acquisitions for the company in the last year and a half; it now has studios in San Francisco, Texas, Beijing, Luxembourg and Vancouver.

Steve Swasey, head of corporate communications for Kabam, said the San Francisco free-to-play game developer plans to keep Exploding Barrel's team of more than 30 developers working on new games in Vancouver.

"This is very much an acquisition by Kabam to grow Kabam in Vancouver," Swasey told Business in Vancouver. "They have tremendous talent, and talent in the high-fidelity, high-profile console games, and also in areas we want to enhance – 3D, for instance – and other genres of games."

Swasey said Exploding Barrel is working on three new games, two of which will be launched shortly.
