HootSuite founder Ryan Holmes has been named Canadian entrepreneur of the year for 2012 in KPMG's Canadian Startup Awards, and Vancouver startup Indochino was named best startup.

Presented by KPMG, the winners were chosen by Techvibes readers based on 18,000 votes. Payfirma, another Vancouver startup, was a runner-up in the best startup category.

The 2012 Canadian Startup Award is just the latest for Holmes, who also won the BC Technology Industry Association's person of the year award for 2012.

Holmes has been on a roll lately, with his social media dashboard company growing exponentially. Last year, the company – which boasts five million users – received a $20 million investment from Toronto-based OMERS Ventures, and made a number of acquisitions, including Seesmic, a social media company based in San Francisco, and grew from about 80 employees to more than 200.

Another local winner was Summify, acquired by Twitter last year, in the most significant acquisition category.
