B.C. is far from the centre of the universe — that would be Toronto, of course.

So it might be little wonder to some that the West Coast’s biggest cities are among the worst performers when it comes to Internet access, according to a report released Thursday (April 28) by the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA).

The CIRA ranks Toronto as the No. 1 city in Canada when Internet performance is measured by speed, quality and future-readiness.

No B.C. cities cracked the top 10 list.

Instead, Burnaby (No. 17), Vancouver (No. 18), Victoria (No. 20) and Surrey (No. 22) occupied the bottom half of the list measuring Canada’s 25 biggest cities.

The data was gathered from 126,000 tests crowdsourced from Internet users across the country.

Telus (TSX:T) announced last fall it would invest $1 billion in building a gigabit-enabled fibre network throughout the City of Vancouver.

The company said the plan would be to connect 400,000 homes and business to its network over the next five years to deliver some of the fastest speeds in Canada.

The CIRA report found average download speeds in Vancouver registers at 16.36 megabits per second (Mbps) compared with 22.33 Mbps. Surrey offers average speeds of 16.86 Mbps while Burnaby clocks in at 17.36 Mbps and Victoria clocks in at 16.33 Mbps.
