Whistler, British Columbia, has won an award from Google Canada recognizing it as one of Canada's top five online business communities.
The eTown Award acknowledges a community's investment in online tools and resources as a way of growing business.
Chris O'Neill, Google Canada's managing director, said the award recognizes entrepreneurism and the ability to take advantage of current trends.
"Every day, Canadians turn to the Internet looking for products and services, and it's the businesses and communities engaging with consumers online that will lead Canada's future economic growth," he said.
John Weston, member of Parliament for West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country, said this award yet again demonstrates Whistler's ability to lead the way in terms of innovation.
"What was once a world-class ski resort demonstrates the ability to operate in a world-class way beyond skiing: in hosting world conferences, producing film festivals, promoting literacy and now showing the world how to encourage innovation and collaboration," said Weston.
The other four Google eTown Award winners were:
- Halifax, Nova Scotia;
- Saint-Sauveau, Quebec;
- Newmarket, Ontario; and
- Canmore, Alberta.
