The City of North Vancouver council has approved a $100 million port project for improvements to Low Level Road.
The project, which will raise and realign the road to create capacity for two additional rail lines, was previously voted down last summer because some councillors were concerned about a lack of detail in the project plans. (See “North Shore kills Gateway project” – July 5, 2011.)
However, with council’s endorsement this week, the project is now set for completion in spring 2014.
In a statement released after the June 18 council vote, Port Metro Vancouver president and CEO Robin Silvester touted the project’s benefits.
“The Low Level Road project is designed to meet growing domestic and international trade demands and address long-standing community concerns related to traffic congestion, safety, slope stability and train-related noise,” he said.
“Our research and consultation show that there is significant support at the local level for this project, and we are pleased to be moving ahead with these important transportation improvements.”
