The border located in Aldergrove will be getting a $17.7 million expansion, which includes the installment of a Nexus lane.

Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Steven Blaney made the announcement, saying the project will see additional Primary Inspection Lanes (PILs) added to the border crossing.

Louise Yako, president and CEO of the BC Trucking Association said she is pleased that the government listened to the industry’s requests for improvements to border efficiency.

“As trucking has grown and expanded into the Fraser Valley, so too has demand for Aldergrove to become a full commercial port,” Yako said.

“Not only is it a relief valve when other nearby ports become congested, it will play an increasingly important role as development continues eastward.”

The BC Chamber of Commerce also approved the move, saying it had been requesting investment in this border crossing since 2011.

“This investment is timely and much-needed, given the population and economic growth in the Fraser Valley, and continued growth of Asia-Pacific trade through Vancouver,” said John Winter, Chamber president and CEO.

“This project promotes B.C.’s cross-border trade and our province’s broader economic growth.”

This project is the last step in a $65 million expansion and modernization strategy for borders in the region over the past five years.

The contract for the work has been awarded to Surrey’s Lark Projects Ltd.
