The B.C. government announced Friday it will implement new rate measures for container truck drivers.
The news comes after consultations with industry. In total, the province will proceed with 10 of 12 measures that were recommended in the B.C. Container Trucking Commissioner’s report on rates and remuneration.
These include amending the fuel surcharge formula to account for the average monthly cost of diesel prices in Vancouver, and conducting a remuneration review every two years.
By fall, B.C.’s Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure expects to have implemented phased increases to the hourly rate for independent operators. Government also plans to amend zone definitions, and increase rates for longer distance moves in the on-dock and off-dock rate tables.
"We are creating an enhanced rate structure and implementing several measures, which will benefit more than 1,700 hard-working British Columbians and their families,” stated Claire Trevena, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, in a news release.
"Many industry stakeholders participated in the rate review,” added B.C. Container Trucking Commissioner Michael Crawford.
"Government's measured approach to the implementation of the recommendations benefits drivers and will ensure the ongoing stability and advancement of the sector."
