What happened: The B.C. government is improving sanitation stations along several commercial trucking routes.

Why it matters: The measures help protect the health and safety of commercial truck drivers who play a critical role in the B.C. and Canadian supply chains.

The provincial government will fund the installation of portable toilets along several commercial trucking routes in B.C. to help improve sanitation conditions for truck drivers at certain pull-out, inspection and chain-up locations.

Installation began over the weekend and approximately 20 toilets have been installed to date. The province has said the installations will be completed over the coming weeks and that it will look at adding additional facilities in the weeks ahead.

Measures to slow the spread of COVID-19 have impacted restaurant services and facilities used by truckers as they move goods and supplies across the province and the country.

Earlier this month, Tim Hortons re-opened more than 400 of its locations near Canadian highways to provide food, drink and washroom access to truck drivers.

In B.C., there are 203 rest areas across the province, all of which are equipped with toilet facilities. They will all remain open during the pandemic.
