Carshare company Car2Go is replacing 650 of its 1,000 vehicles with newer cars, the company announced September 12.
The new cars are 2015 Smart Cars. The company also has a small fleet of four-door Mercedes B-Class vehicles, which launched last year.
“The new Car2Go is equipped with the technology and features our members have come to love from our 4-door Mercedes-Benz Car2Gos,” said Car2Go Vancouver general manager Chris Iuvancigh. “Now they will be able to enjoy these features—including a smoother ride—in a Car2Go small enough to fit into parking spaces a standard-size vehicle would never fit.”
Features of the new cars include a more powerful motor and seat warmers.
Car2Go is rolling out new vehicles in Vancouver and Washington D.C. today. In the coming weeks, it will be replacing cars in other cities across the country.
The share service has 118,000 members in Vancouver. The company said it estimates each one of its cars has removed 9 vehicles from the city’s roads, for a total of 8,200 vehicles. It said each one of these eliminated vehicles has led to an estimated decrease of 11 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions.
Car2Go has satellite parking spots in Richmond, the City of North Vancouver and Burnaby. It does not operate in any other municipalities around the Lower Mainland or the Fraser Valley. On September 14, one of the company’s competitors, Zipcar, will be launching service in the City of Coquitlam.
