The City of Vancouver has announced that all train rails and ties have been removed from the former Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd. (CP) line running through the Arbutus Corridor, ahead of schedule.

The July completion, announced Aug. 2, clears the city to begin construction on a temporary pathway for pedestrians and cyclists that, once complete, will stretch from Fir Street to Milton Street in the South Vancouver area. The path between West 16th Avenue and King Edward has already been paved.

The city expects the Arbutus Greenway project office to be fully staffed and operational by the end of summer. Public consultation on the Arbutus Greenway is anticipated to begin this fall.

The city purchased the Arbutus Corridor from CP for $55 million in March of this year, and plans to turn the corridor’s 42 acres of space into a pedestrian and cyclist greenway that connects Marpole and False Creek.
